James Madison All-American transfer DB D'Angelo Ponds committed to the Indiana football program on Saturday.

The Indiana football program landed a massive commitment from James Madison All-American transfer DB D’Angelo Ponds.

Ponds had nearly two dozen programs reach out to him after entering the portal last week.

On3.com has Ponds rated the top overall player in the portal.

Ponds put together a freshman All-American season last year under the umbrella of Curt Cignetti and Bryant Haines. Now both with Indiana football, there could be a potential reunion, especially with IU’s need in the secondary.

Ponds had 52 tackles, 12 pass deflections, two interceptions and a fumble recovery last year.

He had four or more tackles in nine games and was third in the league in pass breakups.

Ponds was a Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Semifinalist.

“For a young guy, he’s a leader,” new James Madison head coach Bob Chesney said. “His skillset [is] very, you know, very high. He can do a lot of things, including tackle and get off blocks. You know, his coverage skills are undeniable.”

Indiana football has just six cornerbacks on scholarship heading into the summer after adding Cedarius Doss from Austin Peay earlier this month. The Hoosiers lost starting cornerback Kobee Minor last week to the transfer portal in a bit of a surprise.
