The first live evaluation period has come and gone and with that, many storylines have arrived. For the Indiana basketball program, that is the case as the staff was busy out on the road.
Indiana assistant coaches Kenya Hunter and Yasir Rosemond spent most of the weekend at the Nike EYBL event in Georgia, while Brian Walsh and Jordan Hulls were in Iowa for Adidas 3SSB.
HoosierIllustrated.com spent most of the weekend focused on the numerous prospects on the EYBL circuit.
Here are the takeaways and notes from the first weekend.
Indiana extends two new offers to 2024 guards during and after the weekend. First was Boo Williams (Va.) guard Austin Swartz. Indiana basketball assistant coaches Kenya Hunter and Yasir Rosemond saw Swartz three times before extending the offer. Swartz was one of the best shooters of the weekend, finishing the four games with a 21.8 point per game averaging and shooting 16-of-33 from three. The second offer was to MoKan Elite 2024 guard Curtis Givens. Givens plays for Montverde Academy (Fla.) and knows the success Jalen Hood-Schifino had at IU this season. Givens had 19 assists to just two turnovers in 101 minutes this weekend.
2024 guard Jaeden Mustaf is eyeing a visit to Indiana in June. Mustaf told HoosierIllustrated that he doesn’t have a set date for the visit but is looking at middle of June. Mustaf named a top five last month that consisted of Indiana, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Miami (Fla.) and NC State. Indiana watched Mustaf multiple times this weekend, including his 30-point performance against NH Lightning.
2025 forward Caleb Wilson had a very good weekend. Wilson was an intriguing prospect when we saw him last summer, but this time around he showed a lot of growth and a game that was much more polished offensively. He’s a very active and aggressive forward who can play both on the perimeter and in the paint. He showed a much more developed ability to handle the ball and shoot from the wing — making a few 3s. If he can continue to develop a consistent jumper, he will be very difficult to stop. Indiana has offered and watched him numerous times this weekend. He averaged 19.0 points and 6.0 rebounds.
2026 forward Tyran Stokes is a very intriguing prospect that Indiana is involved with. At 6-foot-7, Stokes is playing up two age groups in the 17U division and showed that he already belongs. He averaged 14.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 62.9 percent from the field. He had 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in front of Indiana basketball assistant coaches Kenya Hunter and Yasir Rosemond.
The 2025 class is made up of tons of talented targets for Indiana. The Hoosiers area already heavily involved with numerous high four-star and five-star talent and making good strides. Jalen Haralson, Meleek Thomas and Trey McKenney all had terrific weekends and showed their ability to be high-level guards, all playing up a division. Trent Sisley and Caleb Wilson are talented front court players who showed their versatility as well. Indiana is in a good place with its target list in the class.
Texas staying involved with 2024 wing Liam McNeeley. It was reported that McNeeley is taking an official visit to Texas on Monday and Tuesday, a big step in his recruitment. Up to this point, his only official visit was to Indiana last fall. Texas — McNeeley’s home state — has always been very active in his recruitment but hit a road block when Chris Beard was fired. Now, Rodney Terry is at the helm and getting McNeeley on campus is huge for the Longhorns.
2024 wing Tyler Betsey still on the Indiana radar. Indiana had been involved with the NY Rens wing for most of the fall but things seemed to have stalled after a potential visit was rescheduled. Indiana made sure to get eyes on Betsey this weekend, however. They had at least one assistant at three of the NY Rens games — mainly for Betsey. He’s a 6-foot-8 shooter who was 11-of-31 from three in four games.
