New Indiana football head coach Curt Cignetti and the rest of his offensive staff are looking to bring in their next star quarterback – something they did every year at James Madison.

Quickly, they turned to one of the top players in the midwest and an in-state four-star recruit in Tyler Cherry. Cherry, the star quarterback at Center Grove (Ind.) high school, is currently a Duke commit but is open to hearing out other programs.

Duke lost its head coach Mike Elko to Texas A&M last month which have given programs like Indiana football and Michigan State a chance at flipping the talented signal-caller.

Cherry threw for 3,156 yards with 34 touchdowns to just six interceptions this season while 71.5 percent of his passes. As a junior he completed 65 percent of his passes for 2,269 yards and 22 touchdowns.

218 of his 305 pass attempts for 3,156 yards and 34 touchdowns to just six interceptions. As a junior Cherry completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 2,269 yards and 22 touchdowns to five interceptions leading the Trojans to a State Championship.

Indiana is acting swiftly as it hosted Cherry for a Friday visit last week, according to 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong.

“Got to meet with Coach Cignetti, Coach Tino and Coach Shanahan and talk to those guys and talk football and it was a different feel down in Bloomington than before,” Cherry said about the new Indiana football staff.

Cherry followed up his Friday visit with a weekend trip to Michigan State.

Wiltfong says Cherry is set to meet with new Duke head coach Manny Diaz this weekend.

It’s unclear if a de-commitment is in Cherry’s future, but if so Indiana football will clearly be in the discussion thanks to the success Cignetti and his staff at James Madison have had with its past quarterbacks.

Cherry is ranked the No. 298 player in the 247Sports Composite Rankings for the 2024 class. He is the No. 18 quarterback in the class and the No. 6 player in Indiana.
