Indiana football offensive coordinator Walt Bell spoke to reporters on Thursday and discussed the offensive progression in Spring practice ahead of his second season in Bloomington. Spring practice ends on April 15 with Indiana’s spring game.

Below are some key quotes from Bell’s Q&A with reporters.

Bell on Dexter Williams’ rehab: “I know he started to run, and he’s doing great. Obviously Dr. (James) Andrews, who did the surgery, is kind of world renowned and the fact that he did the surgery kind of speaks for itself and he’s doing everything he’s supposed to be doing. But in terms of ahead of schedule, behind schedule, on schedule, that’s way above my ability level. I just know that he looks good and he’s starting to move around and he’s a great kid. Can’t wait to get him back.”

Bell on current QB’s responding to adversity: “The only way to master it is through failure … I think on the front end you have to do a great job of everyday the name of the game is continuous improvement and trying to be better than yesterday. So if that’s the mindset, the failure is easier to handle … if they can’t handle us and the meat of practice, they can’t handle it on Saturday.”

Bell on Jaylin Lucas: “He had two of the greatest runs I’ve seen in my life. It’s a shame they were behind closed doors. He’s done a great job mentally of doing the things we need him to do … He’s playing all over the field … he’s now really become a true multi-purpose tool. We still have to continue to evolve and develop those tools, but if he gets it — enough time, we will be in every game … he was just making a lot of people miss, fall down. He has a really special gift and one of the better ball in hand players I’ve been around.”

Bell on the offensive line: “A lot of improvement, within the techniques and fundamentals. Coach Bostad has done a phenomenal job … really excited for all of those guys, there has been a lot of improvement there.”
