One of the signature dunks of the NBA season came from former Indiana basketball star forward Trayce Jackson-Davis and now, it’s up for an award.
This week it was announced that Jackson-Davis’ dunk over Spurs rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama is up for the Dunk of the Year in the NBA.
The dunk came at the 1:13 mark of the fourth quarter in a game between the Golden State Warriors and the San Antonio Spurs on March 11. Trayce Jackson-Davis took the ball from the right wing, dribbling left across the paint and finishing above the 7-foot-4 extended arm of Wembanyama. It stretched an eight-point lead to 10. At that point, it ‘sucked the life out of the building’.
“The momentum shift,” Warriors rookie Brandin Podziemski said after the game. ” … after he dunked that, the game was kind of over. Sucked the life out of the building.”
Trayce Jackson-Davis finished with 13 points on 6-of-7 from the field and added 11 rebounds and five assists in 26 minutes. He had a +/- of +20 in the 112-102 win.
“I told Loon (Kevon Looney) before the game that if I got the chance to try him (Wembanyama) I would,” Jackson-Davis said. “At the end of the day, sometimes you dunk on people and sometimes you get dunked on. So, it’s just a basketball play.”
While Jackson-Davis got the best of Wembanyama that night, he would be on the receiving end of a dunk from the Spurs rookie later in the season.
Jackson-Davis ended his rookie season with averages of 7.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.1 blocks per game. He appeared in 68 games and had 16 starts, averaging 16.6 minutes per game. He also 70.2 percent from the floor.
He started the final 11 games of the season for the Warriors, playing 25.3 minutes per game. He saw his averages increase to 10.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.6 blocks per game.
