Indiana basketball landed a commitment from top-15 prospect Liam McNeeley on Sunday afternoon.
McNeeley is the first commitment for Indiana in the 2024 class.
Originally from Texas, McNeeley transferred to Montverde last season and emerged as one of the top prospects in the country. This past season he averaged 13.7 points and was second in the NIBC averaging 2.2 made 3s per game.
Playing for Florida Rebels on the Nike EYBL Circuit this summer, McNeeley averaged 16.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game across 17 games. He shot 37 percent from three (30-of-81).
HoosierIllustrated.com spoke with Max Feldman, national scout for MADE Hoops, to breakdown McNeeley’s game, what he’ll bring to Indiana, what the recruiting win means for the Hoosiers and more.
Q: Liam has proven to be one of the most efficient players throughout the last year, how would you break down his game?
Feldman: He’s one of the more unique Top-10, five-star type of prospect in recent years in my eyes. Most step onto the floor and provide big flashes primarily, but tend to lack a steadiness. McNeeley is the antithesis — he’s ultra steady in his approach, takes what defenses give him and makes the right play at a very high rate. A high level shooter, connector and communicator at 6-7+. He processed the game at an exceptionally high level and has a rare level of polish to his game.
Q: What has been the biggest growth area you’ve seen from him since this time last year?
Feldman: For me, it’s just been his versatility. He’s used his foundation of shot-making and decision-making to open up the rest of his game. He has excellent feel as a slasher and while not loaded with explosiveness, understands angles at a high level. I’ve always been a bit higher than most on McNeeley’s defensive makeup as well, an area he’s continued progress in as he’s added strength.
Q: What will Liam bring to Indiana right away?
Feldman: Smarts, shooting, steadiness and maturity. Mentioned it many times in other pieces and discussions, but if you asked me to pick any 2024 prospect to step on an NBA floor and provide positive value tonight, it’s McNeeley. That should shine through rather quick in Bloomington.
Q: How do you think his skillset matches up with Mike Woodson’s offensive system?
Feldman: I think it’ll be interesting to see how the scheme shifts with Trayce Jackson-Davis moving onto the next level and I do believe McNeeley is one who you could throw in any scheme and he’ll fit in. With that being said, I think McNeeley could thrive in a Race Thompson-esque role. Tough, rebounds, makes quick decisions, does a ton of little things to impact winning and defends multiple spots.
Q: What are the 1 or 2 key areas that Liam needs to focus on improving before getting to Indiana?
Feldman: Continued progression in the weight room and just working towards adding another gear athletically. He’s been accustomed to slotting in around other elite prospects, and he’ll do the same again this year at MVA, but as a senior, stepping into a bigger role offensively will be one thing I’m tracking closely. If the summer with Florida Rebels was any sign, he’s certainly capable of taking on more creator-duties.
Q: How important of a recruiting win is this for Indiana, landing a guy they have been zeroed in on for over a year?
Feldman: It’s a massive win. Nabbing a five-star prospect outside of your own backyard is a statement win on the recruiting trail. Woodson and company have been locked in here for sometime, and to cross the finish line with a number of power programs getting in the mix is highly impressive.
