Indiana basketball fans have plenty to be excited about this season, especially when Assembly Hall is packed and buzzing. The 17th nationally ranked Indiana Hoosiers took the floor in the season opener. However, early in the game against SIUE, there was an unmistakable frustration. The team hit the court with intense energy; newcomers Myles Rice, Kanaan Carlyle, and Oumar Ballo were clearly eager to impress, maybe a bit too eager as their mistakes added up. Still, their enthusiasm was infectious.
On the other hand, returning players Mackenzie Mgbako and Malik Reneau, along with Trey Galloway off the bench, brought a sense of calm and consistency. The Hoosiers built a 20-9 lead, showing how their top lineup can command a game. Then, Coach Mike Woodson made a move that left me frustrated, scratching my heads. He rotated out most of the starters. In those few minutes, SIUE managed to claw back and tie the game at 27. After Woodson reinserted the main players, Indiana regained a double-digit lead and ultimately secured a 19-point win, but it was a game that should have never been close.
Mike Woodson can easily solidify the rotation
Buy games, especially against smaller schools, are more than just automatic wins. These are golden opportunities for Indiana to solidify team chemistry and boost their NET ranking. Allowing these teams to hang around or gain momentum risks not only losing confidence but also squandering chances to take advantage of ranking metrics.
Moving forward, Mike Woodson should prioritize an eight-man rotation for these types of games. The starters, combined with Trey Galloway, Bryson Tucker, and Luke Goode, have the balance and depth to dominate, while Malik Reneau adds flexibility as a backup center. By sticking to this tight rotation, Indiana can make the most of buy games by allowing the key players to build on-court chemistry and learn how to close out games effectively. Once up at least 30 points, Woodson can be more loose with lineups.
Make a statement vs Eastern Illinois
With Eastern Illinois up next, Indiana has an opportunity to send a message. Dominating from start to finish, keeping a consistent rotation, and building a substantial lead early should be the focus.
Buy games are a chance for Indiana to develop a killer instinct. Coach Woodson’s top players need time together in game situations to gel, and the Hoosiers need to show that they won’t allow lesser opponents to linger around. Starting this weekend, it’s time for Indiana to keep their foot on the gas and demonstrate the full strength of this lineup.
