The 2024-25 Indiana basketball season may be still months away but there is certainly plenty to be excited about in Bloomington with the entire roster now on campus for summer workouts.
In total, the Hoosiers lost 6 different guys from last year’s squad for multiple, different reasons. You had players that opted to go elsewhere like CJ Gunn, Kaleb Banks, and Payton Sparks, you had two graduates in Xavier Johnson and Anthony Walker, and then you had your biggest departure of star center Kel’el Ware putting his name in the NBA draft.
The Hoosiers however, brought back an outstanding core of Trey Galloway, Malik Reneau, Mackenzie Mgbako, Gabe Cupps, Anthony Leal and Jakai Newton. To be completely honest too, these were the guys you needed to be bring back without question. The ones that left, even if it did sting to an extent, were guys that you could afford to replace.
In the transfer portal, Indiana brought in guards Myles Rice and Kanaan Carlyle, wing Luke Goode, and big men Oumar Ballo and Langdon Hatton. Indiana also even replaced five-star, McDonald’s All-American wing Liam McNeeley with fellow five-star, McDonald’s All-American wing Bryson Tucker.
“I tried to build our team around how I played a little bit in New York,” Mike Woodson said last month. “We had guys like Jason Kidd and Raymond Felton, (Pablo) Prigioni. Guys that can create, make plays not only for themselves, but for their teammates. That was one of the things when we (the staff) sat down after the season in terms of evaluating players that entered the portal — that was going to be an emphasis on players that we brought back here from a perimeter standpoint.”
