The IU basketball program had an influx of talent this offseason and that included the addition of transfer guard Kanaan Carlyle. The former Stanford guard earned a big honor on Monday when the program announced he was invited to the Chris Paul Elite Guard Camp.

The Chris Paul Elite Guard Camp takes place annually and features the ‘top 30 high school’ and ‘top 15 college’ point guards from around the country. The camp encompasses skill development, film breakdown and life skill sessions for an all-around experience.

The camp takes place this week and runs through Wednesday, July 3. Former IU guard Jalen Hood-Schifino also participated ahead of his freshman season at Indiana.

Carlyle, who played just one season at Stanford, averaged 11.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last season.

“Kanaan is a dynamic player with the ball in his hands with the length and skillset to create scoring chances for himself and others,” IU basketball head coach Mike Woodson said. “His ability of the bounce pairs nicely with his shooting stroke. His length, quickness, and mentality give him the capability to be a high-impact defender for our ballclub.”

After missing the first month of his freshman season, he made an immediate impact when he returned to the floor. He scored in double-figures 15 times, including two 20-point games and one 31-point outing.

His career high was 31 points against Washington State. He also scored 28 points in his fourth game of the season against Arizona. He was 9-of-13 from three in those two games.

Carlyle is a dynamic athlete and scorer, however. He has good size at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds and does a terrific job getting to the rim. He shot 77.6 percent from the foul line while attempting 3.7 free throws per game.

“Kanaan is gifted,” Illinois transfer wing Luke Goode said last week. “He’s super quick, he’s probably the second fastest player I’ve played with other than Terrence [Shannon Jr.] in terms of having the ball in the open floor.”

Carlyle is a former top-60 prospect in the 2023 class who is currently projected as a first round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft by some of the early mock drafts. He was ranked as the No. 15 overall transfer in the portal.
