The start that the Indiana women’s basketball program got off to on Thursday night was one that not many people have ever seen. In face, it hadn’t been done in the last 20 years.
Indiana women’s basketball became the first women’s Division I team to open up 15-of-15 from the field since 1999, when Portland went 15-of-15 in the first half against Pepperdine.
It didn’t take Indiana a half to do so, however. It started 13-of-13 in the first quarter before going 2-of-2 to start the second quarter. It helped the Hoosiers get out to a 36-17 lead over Michigan after one quarter before eventually winning 80-59.
“I love the start we got off too. I think you guys would agree, I loved how we shared the ball in the first quarter,” Indiana women’s basketball head coach Teri Moren said postgame. “I loved how fast we played. We knew we had to get out of the gates early. We had to strike first. We talked a lot about being the more aggressive team, so I loved our mindset in the first quarter.”
Sydney Parrish paced Indiana with 14 points and three 3s in quarter one. Sara Scalia had 11 and three 3s as well. Indiana had 10 assists on its 13 made field goals in the first quarter.
In total, Indiana shot 57.8 percent from the floor and 47.4 percent from three.
Indiana had 17 assists on 26 made field goals. Indiana led for 39:34, never trailing.
“The good part was that we had the lead and they really forced us to do some different things offensively,” Moren continued. “What I learned about our team is that we have to be better at being able to execute against pressure and not be forced to get out of some of our continuity offense that we want to run.”
Indiana gets back on the court this weekend for a 2:00 pm ET tip at Nebraska.
