The Indiana football program added to its roster through the transfer portal with pass rusher Trey Laing. Laing committed to Indiana on Monday night.

Laing spent the past season with Southern University. He had 38 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, five sacks and one forced fumble.

Laing was originally a three-star prospect in the 2019 class. He was rated as the No. 70 wide defensive end in the 247Sports composite rankings. Originally from Florida, Laing committed to South Florida out of high school. He chose the Bulls over programs like Cincinnati, Purdue, Iowa State, Syracuse and others.

After two years at South Florida, Laing transferred to East Mississippi Community College in the junior college ranks.

In 10 games at East Mississippi, Laing had 53 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and six sacks.

Laing is 6-foot-3 and 224 pounds and brings experience and depth to the Indiana football roster. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

The Indiana football program could be close to landing another member of its 2024 recruiting class.

On Sunday, in-state three-star running back Khobie Martin re-opened his recruitment following an offer from the Indiana football program. Martin received an offer from the Hoosiers last week and it quickly made him re-think his next step.

Martin had been committed to Miami (Oh.) before the Indiana offer.

Before he committed to Miami, he had power five schools such as Indiana, Iowa State, Boston College and Iowa showing increased interest. He had other offers from Indiana State, Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky, Ball State and Illinois State.

The Fishers (Ind.) back is coming off of a junior season in which he was named All-State, rushing for 1,194 yards and 16 touchdowns. He averaged 7.2 yards per carry.

Through four games this season, Martin is up to 715 yards and 11 touchdowns. He’s averaging 7.9 yards a carry and 178.8 yards per game.

He had 285 yards and three touchdowns against rival-Hamilton Southeastern last week.

The Indiana football program currently has 14 commits in the 2024 class. If Martin were to commit to Indiana, he would be the first running back pledge of the recruiting class.

The Indiana football program added a late transfer as fall camp is underway as offensive lineman Drew Evans committed to the Hoosiers.

Evans is a 6-foot-4 and 300-pound lineman who transfers in from Wisconsin.

Evans was a preferred walk-on with the Badgers but will be on scholarship with Indiana, a source confirmed to HoosierIllustrated.com.

He follows offensive line coach Bob Bostad who is in his first season with the Indiana football program following a sting with Wisconsin.

“Bob (Bostad) has been a tremendous track record in our conference. I already feel like we’ve gotten better, certain things that he’s brought,” Indiana football head coach Tom Allen said at Big Ten Media Day. ” … Got several guys that play a lot of football at that position for us. I’m excited for that group to lead us on our way on offense.”

Evans was a three-sport athlete in high school at Fort Atkinson (Wisc.). He earned First-Team All-Conference honors as a senior.

Evans was part of the 2022 class and was rated the No. 35 overall player in the state in the 247Sports rankings.

As he entered his college career, Evans is projected as an interior offensive lineman.

Indiana football 2024 commit ‘has every tool to be a difference maker’ early in his career

Indiana football commit Christian Peterson is one of its 2024 prospects who can make an impact 'early on in his career'. (Christian Peterson - @ChrisPetersonn / Twitter)

Tom Allen and the Indiana football program have put together a strong summer on the recruiting trail, landing 14 of its 17-member 2024 class over the last month. While the recruiting ‘stars’ may be at a minimum, there are some expected sleepers in IU’s class.

One such prospect hails from in-state Carmel (Ind.) high school. Three-star defensive back Christian Peterson committed to Indiana the start of June, jumping on his only power five offer.

Other schools that were involved in his recruitment were Western Michigan, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, James Madison, Kent State, Toledo and others.

Despite the lack of big name programs involved, Indiana could be getting a steal with Peterson.

According to Rivals National Recruiting Analyst Clint Cosgrove, Peterson ‘has every tool to be a difference maker’ early on in his IU career.

“The Carmel (Ind.) standout receives rave reviews from his high school coaches and whether you have seen him in person – or on film – you can see exactly why his coaches are excited about his future on the field. Peterson can flat out cover, is fluid in the hips, has an incredible burst and plays a physical brand of football,” Cosgrove wrote.” He has also proven to be a weapon with the ball in his hands which projects well in the return game and also makes him dynamic enough to be used on offense if needed. As a 5.5 three-star, Peterson is likely underrated right now and he has every tool to be a difference maker early on in his career at Indiana.”

As a junior, Peterson posted 35 tackles, four pass break-ups and three interceptions.

Peterson is ranked as the No. 100 cornerback in the 2024 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The Indiana football program has had a lot of turnover in its secondary over the last two years and will have more when the 2024 class steps on campus next fall.
