Indiana basketball sophomore wing Mackenzie Mgbako has entered the transfer portal.

With Indiana moving on from the Mike Woodson era, it was widely expected that many Indiana basketball players would be entering the transfer portal to at least test the waters. The Hoosiers recently announced the hiring of Darien DaVries as the next head coach of program.

“After careful consideration and thorough reflection of my time at Indiana University, I would like to express my profound gratitude for the past two years,” Mgbako wrote on social media. “Wearing the iconic red and white has been a truly remarkable experience, and Indiana will always remain a formative part of my journey.”

“Given recent changes in the coaching staff, I have decided in consultation with my family that testing the waters of the NBA is the best course of action. In choosing this path, l am able to retain my eligibility in the transfer portal while also keeping an eye on developments within the Indiana program.”

It is worth noting that Mackenzie Mgbako did not officially rule out a return to Indiana basketball.

After winning Co-Big Ten Player of the Year in the 2023-24 season, Mgbako returned to the Indiana program for a second season where he averaged 12.2 points on 43.7% shooting. He shot 32.9% from three and added 4.6 rebounds per game as well in his sophomore campaign. He started in 64 of 65 total games played for the Hoosiers.

Before coming to Indiana, Mgbako was originally committed to Duke before re-opening his recruitment and choosing the Hoosiers over Kansas. Mgbako was rated as a five-star prospect out of high school and was a McDonald’s All-American.

Mgbako joins Malik Reneau and Gabe Cupps when it comes to players from this year’s Indiana basketball team that are in the portal.
