Tom Izzo’s record-setting night will have to wait as Indiana basketball upset No. 11 Michigan State on the road 71-67.

Izzo had the chance to break Bob Knight’s record for the most wins in Big Ten history against the legendary coach’s former school, but it was not meant to be as the Hoosiers pulled off the upset on the road.

Mike Woodson elected to change the starting lineup with the Hoosiers losing their last five games coming into this one. Luke Goode and Trey Galloway started in place of Myles Rice and Malik Reneau alongside Anthony Leal, Oumar Ballo, and Mackenzie Mgbako.

Despite the lineup change Indiana basketball found themselves trailing 10-2 in the first three minutes of the game, but the Hoosiers were able to weather the storm thanks to Woodson’s decision to switch to a zone defense.

The adjustment sparked a 24-9 run which Indiana used to take a 32-29 lead at the half.

The Hoosiers held on to that lead for the remainder of the game behind the play of their frontcourt duo of Oumar Ballo and Malik Reneau.

Ballo finished the game with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and two assists in 26 minutes of action before he fouled out.

Reneau had a rough first half shooting just 1-8 from the field, but used a big second half to help lead Indiana basketball. Reneau finished the game with 19 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 8-19 from the field.

Both teams leaned heavily on their defense as neither offense could get going with consistency.

As a team, Indiana basketball shot 24-50 (48.0%) from the field but made just 3-13 (23.1)% of their three-point attempts. Michigan State shot just 21-55 (38.2%) from the floor and 4-23 (17.4%) from beyond the arc.

In their return to the starting lineup, Luke Goode and Trey Galloway had solid outings for the Hoosiers. Goode scored 10 points with three rebounds on 2-4 from three with four steals.

Trey Galloway added six points on 3-6 from the field for Indiana basketball.

Myles Rice also contributed 10 points off the bench in the win.

Indiana basketball lost the rebounding battle 36-31 as the Spartans grabbed 12 offensive rebounds to the Hoosiers’ seven. Michigan State used those offensive rebounds to create a 17-9 advantage in second-chance points.

Jaden Akins and Jase Richardson led the way for Michigan State scoring 14 points and 13 points in the loss.

With the win Indiana snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 15-10 on the season and 6-8 in Big Ten Play.

Indiana basketball will be back in action as they return home to face UCLA on Friday night in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
