The Indiana basketball program is expected to be involved in the transfer recruitment of Iowa guard Tony Perkins.
Perkins spent four years at Iowa and hit the transfer portal on Tuesday afternoon. Shortly after entering the portal, Indiana was among nearly a dozen programs to reach out, according to reports. Other programs include Ole Miss, UCLA, Arkansas, Miami, Nebraska, Oklahoma, BYU and others.
Perkins is a 6-foot-4 lead guard from Lawrence North (Ind.) and was runner-up for Indiana Mr. Basketball in 2020 behind Anthony Leal.
He is coming off of a senior season when he averaged 14.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He started all 34 games he appeared in. His assist (25.3) and steal rate (2.8) were both 10th in the Big Ten.
He ranked sixth in the league in free throw attempts, attempting 4.7 per game.
He had 22 points against Indiana basketball on Jan. 30 this season. It was one of eight 20-point games this season, with a season-high 25 points against Wisconsin.
During Big Ten play alone, Perkins averaged 15.5 points across 20 games.
Perkins is the alpha-type lead guard on both ends of the floor who is proven and experienced at the Big Ten level. He hast started 81 of 126 career games — including all 66 games in the past two seasons.
As a junior, Perkins averaged 12.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He had 23 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists at Indiana that season. He also had his career-high 32 points against Illinois.
Perkins is just a career 31.7 percent three-point shooter on 1.6 attempts per game.
He is a quick, physical and athletic guard who uses his size to get into the paint and either finish at the rim or the midrange. He is a career 47.1 percent shooter on 2s and 76.8 percent shooter from the free throw line.
Perkins always plays with a high motor and brings great leadership to the floor. His energy and toughness makes up for any ineffectiveness shooting from the perimeter.
Indiana currently has seven open scholarships and no commits or signees for the 2024 class.
