Indiana basketball head coach Mike Woodson is making a visit out east next month that will likely result in the visit of one key 2024 target.
Woodson is set to speak at the New York Basketball Coaches Clinic at Archbishop Stepinac (NY) high school on September 13. That is the same high school as 2024 five-star point guard Boogie Fland.
The coaches clinic coincides with the live period for college coaches which begins the week before.
The expectation is Woodson will visit with Fland while he’s out there.
Fland is the No. 8 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite Rankings and the No. 2 overall point guard in the class.
As a junior, Fland averaged 18.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game. He shot 34.6 percent from three (62-of-179). Playing for the PSA Cardinals on the Nike EYBL Circuit, Fland averaged 15.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.8 assist per game during the regular season.
Fland took an official visit to Indiana in June and both he and his family were very impressed with the presentation from the Indiana basketball program.
“Mike (Woodson) is great. He been around the NBA half his life but not only is he a good coach and basketball player but he is also a good person,” Fland told HoosierIllustrated.com “He genuinely loves his players and he definitely could’ve stayed and worked as a head coach in the NBA but he wanted to have an impact on young men’s lives so they know what it takes to get to that next level and so that he can be apart of the process in guiding them to be the best they can be.”
“Some of the key takeaways I had from the visit was that Indiana, the state itself is BIG on basketball. You have schools that are BIG on sports and IU is all basketball. So I loved that cuz it means they stand strongly behind their players and the University,” Fland’s father added. “Another thing is that the connection coach Woodson has with his players. They really adapt to him and listen in a grandfather way. Like he’s a players coach.”
Fland has a top eight of Indiana, Kentucky, Alabama, Michigan, North Carolina, Maryland, UConn and St. John’s. Head coaches John Calipari (Kentucky) and Nate Oats (Alabama) will also be part of the New York Basketball Coaches Clinic in September.
Fland has visits to Kentucky and Alabama in September.
HoosierIllustrated.com has seen Boogie Fland multiple times this AAU season and has be able to compile a few scouting notes on his game.
“Because Fland can play both with and without the ball in his hands, going to a place where he can do both is ideal. Fland is a terrific scoring guard who has great explosiveness. Fland is always in attack mode and can score at all three levels on the floor. He is best with the ball in his hands and making plays for himself or teammates. Fland has a very good mid-range game and utilizes a lot of different moves in the paint to create separation and get his shot up. With good size as well, at 6-foot-4, he’s a long and rangy guard who is a very talented defender. He has the tools to be a lockdown on ball defender as well as talented off the ball defensive player.”
