Indiana basketball senior guard Trey Galloway continues to progress nicely from his knee surgery in the spring and is close to a full return to practice, both he and head coach Mike Woodson said on Thursday at Big Ten Media Day.
“He’s not fully recovered,” Mike Woodson said. “But he’s getting there.”
Galloway had surgery in the spring to repair a meniscus injury he suffered on Senior Day.
Galloway, and Indiana, have been extremely deliberate with his rehab process, one that Galloway said was about patience and making sure there was no early return to action.
“It’s been a long process, but a good one,” Galloway said at IU’s media day last month. “I’ve had a lot of time to ease into things. You don’t want to rush anything and come back too soon. Taking my time with it, and making sure I’m strong and 100% back to where I was.”
Indiana basketball returned to preseason practice last week and Galloway was on the floor in limited settings. While he was doing some half court work, full-contact was still to be determined.
On Thursday, Galloway provided a bit more detail about when he may be back to 100 percent.
“Not fully (back), it’s — these last few weeks have been ramping up,” Galloway said. “I’ve done some half court stuff, but this next week I should be pretty much full go.
‘It’s been great to get out there with the guys. It’s been a long process with the knee and everything. It takes a lot of time to recover. I think we’ve done a great job of taking my time with everything. There was no need to rush.”
Galloway averaged 10.8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game last season playing the main ball handler and only true playmaker on the roster.
He became one of four Indiana basketball players with three games of 11+ assists in a career, joining Isiah Thomas, Jamal Meeks and Michael Lewis, doing so all in the last six games he played. He ranked ninth in the Big Ten in assists per game and assist rate. He also ranked ninth in assist to turnover ratio while also playing at least 30 minutes a game.
Despite not being on the floor in a full setting for the summer and early parts of preseason practice, his knowledge of Mike Woodson’s system, expectations with Indiana basketball and more have come in handy for a roster that turned over from last year. With seven new players on the roster, the majority expected to play large roles this season, it’s been an important step for the senior guard.
“Invaluable. They understand coach’s system, what campus is like when kids get back to school and everything,” IU guard Myles Rice said of the returners, including Trey Galloway. “Knowing how to lock in … being in that Indiana uniform, there are a lot of things that come with it, good and bad. So being able to keep your head down … the guys already in the system have that same mindset.”
“Trey Galloway is who he is,” Woodson added. “He’s been a leader since I’ve had him.”
Galloway has appeared in 108 games, including 66 starts, for Indiana basketball throughout his career. He is coming off a career year in games and minutes played, points, assists and steals.
Indiana basketball finsished last year 19-14 and missed the NCAA Tournament. This year, the Hoosiers are picked to finish second in the Big Ten behind Purdue.
