The two representatives at Big Ten Media Day for Indiana basketball have been announced, as senior guard Trey Galloway and sophomore guard Myles Rice will head to Chicago next week.
The men will make their appearance on Thursday, with head coach Mike Woodson set to speak at 11 am ET.
This will be Galloway’s second-straight appearance at Big Ten Media Day as he also represented Indiana basketball in 2023. The senior guard is back for his fifth season in Bloomington after what was his most successful season as a Hoosier.
Last year, Galloway averaged 10.8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game last season playing the main ball handler and only true playmaker on the roster. He became one of four Indiana basketball players with three games of 11+ assists in a career, joining Isiah Thomas, Jamal Meeks and Michael Lewis, doing so all in the last six games he played. He ranked ninth in the Big Ten in assists per game and assist rate. He also ranked ninth in assist to turnover ratio while also playing at least 30 minutes a game.
But, it was an injury on senior day that has been the biggest talking point for the 6-foot-5 guard. Galloway suffered a knee injury against Michigan State that kept him out most of the summer after undergoing surgery in the spring.
He’s been progressing nicely ahead of the season, however, and is ready to make a final impact for the roster this season.
“It’s been a long process, but a good one,” Galloway said at IU’s media day “I’ve had a lot of time to ease into things. You don’t want to rush anything and come back too soon. Taking my time with it, and making sure I’m strong and 100% back to where I was.”
Galloway is part of the final covid class in college basketball — where athletes were given an extra year of eligibility because of the seasons impacted by the covid pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
“Being home, this is where I call home,” Galloway said of why he came back. “Having some unfinished business to take care of.”
Alongside Galloway will be a new face to Bloomington — Myles Rice. The Washington State transfer was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year last season after averaging 14.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game. It was his first full season back after recovering from a cancer diagnosis that caused him to miss all of the previous year.
Rice is expected to be a major part of the Indiana basketball success this year. His speed, quickness and playmaking was a disparate need for this team in the offseason and it’s been on full display ever since he arrived on campus.
“Myles is a savvy, downhill guard that really succeeds in pick-and-roll situations,” Woodson said when Rice signed with IU. “He is a three-level scorer that makes the right play consistently, whether that is getting to the rim or finding the open man. He is going to be a huge help for our ballclub.”
He ultimately chose Indiana basketball out of the transfer portal and recently broke down why IU was the choice for him.
“The authenticity. I tell everybody this all the time. That’s the main thing I was looking for andthat’s the main thing I look for in life throughout people and relationships,” Rice said about his reasons for choosing Indiana. “Woody, the coaching staff, the players were all very authentic since day one and I thought to myself if that was how it was when I first got out here, I can only imagine the more time we spend together and the bond we can build moving each day forward.”
Indiana basketball is coming off of its first season in Mike Woodson’s tenure without making the NCAA Tournament. They finished 19-14 last year.
