HoosierIllustrated Live Blog: FINAL – Indiana Basketball 74, UIndy 52

Indiana basketball opens its season with an exhibition against the University of Indianapolis at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

It will be our first look at the new look 2023-24 Indiana Hoosiers roster

The game will be streaming on Big Ten Network Plus with a 1pm tip off.

Pregame Notes

OUT: F Kaleb Banks (lower body), G Jakai Newton (knee), G Jordan Rayford (lower body)

Indiana starting five: G Xavier Johnson, G Trey Galloway, F Mackenzie Mgbako, F Malik Reneau C Kel’el Ware

UIndy expected starting five: Josiah Tynes, G Paul Zilinskas, F Jesse Bingham, F David Ejah, F Kendrick Tchoua

First Half

Hoosiers win the tip.

Malik Reneau makes a nice step through in the post for the first Indiana’s first basket.

Indiana getting to the rim but has not finished early.

Indiana up 4-3 at the first TV timeout with 15:28 left after a Galloway layup in transition.

Mgbako has missed three of his four free throws early.

CJ Gunn is the first sub for Indiana coming in the game for Trey Galloway.

Timeout Indiana: 5-5 score and Indiana has missed a ton of layups.

Anthony Leal, Gabe Cupps, Payton Sparks and Anthony Walker come into the game for Indiana alongside CJ Gunn.

Payton Sparks grabbed an offensive rebound, kicked it out. He then re-posted and made a nice drop step move for a layup.

Gunn still not afraid to shoot as he hits a nice mid range jumper, IU leads 10-8.

Sparks hits CJ Gunn with a nice pocket pass on the cut that leads to the and one.

Gunn pokes the ball away, Anthony Walker picks it up and throws it ahead back to Gunn who slams it home. Indiana leads 14-11 with 7:22 remaining.

Reneau back into the game for Sparks and he makes a nice post move for the layup.

X and Ware back into the game for IU. Timeout on the floor with IU leading 17-13 with 4:58 left in the half.

Mackenzie Mgbako finishes through contact off of the pass from Xavier Johnson, 19-19 with 3:31 remaining.

After a high-low from Reneau to Ware for the layup, Mgbako dunks it in transition.

Then on the other end Ware pins the UIndy layup attempt. Next possession Ware swats another layup. IU leads 23-21

Big three from UIndy puts them up by one with under a minute left.

Zilinskas and-one puts UIndy up 27-25.

Gunn misses the final shot of the half and UIndy leads 27-25 after a disappointing half from IU.

Second Half

Indiana gets a couple of layups to go early and have taken a 33-31 lead.

Ware throws down a huge and-one dunk in transition but misses the free throw.

Timeout on the floor as IU leads 35-31 with 15:59 left. Mgbako has done a good job using his length and quick on defense while Ware has been making his presence felt on both ends. Much better start to the second half than to the first half.

Xavier Johnson has made the first three of the game for Indiana with 14:10 left in the 2nd half and then Reneau dunks it in transition to put IU up 42-34 which leads to a timeout.

Indiana is 9/13 this half after shooting 10/31 in the first half, a much needed improvement.

Anthony Walker made a nice power dribble then finished through traffic to put IU up 48-38 then Gabe Cupps forces a 10 second violation with some great ball pressure in the full court.

Payton Sparks is hurt after being fouled in transition. He was able to get up but was limping and is being looked at by the training staff.

Indiana leads 53-38 with 7:59 left.

This half has been much better on both ends, Indiana has really used the defense to get out in transition for easy buckets.

Cupps with another steal and it leads to a Walker layup in transition. IU leads 57-45

Mackenzie Mgbako buries his first three attempt of the pass from Galloway. IU leads 62-45

FINAL: Indiana 74, U Indy 52.
