“He’s going to get this done”. Confidence has been the mantra for the IU baseball program this season. And, so far it has led them to a NCAA Regional Final appearance.
After a big ninth-inning surge against West Virginia in the opener, the Hoosiers built on that performance and continued its strong play against top-seeded Kentucky on Saturday night.
It was a stalemate for much of the game — tied at one a piece through six innings. Then, things broke loose.
After a two-run top of the frame for the Wildcats to take a 3-1 lead, the Hoosiers had their backs up against the wall.
After the first two batters reached base, it was senior Peter Serruto who sent the game into a frenzy.
Serruto had hit just two home runs this season coming into Saturday — but with one swing of the bat, his third homer of the year was his biggest. It was a three-run home run that gave the Hoosiers a 4-3 lead — something they wouldn’t give up, eventually leading to a 5-3 win.
“That takes the cake,” Serruto said of his homer. “That was a pretty awesome moment.“
Phillip Glasser was in the on-deck circle and knew Serruot was about to do something special.
“I saw him just looking at his bat and he was cool,” Glasser said. “And I was, like, ‘He’s going to get this done.’ … I knew that he wasn’t going to give that at-bat away because of his emotions.”
