Indiana basketball got their season unofficially started this past Sunday as the Hoosiers hosted the University of Indianapolis in their first of two exhibition games. Although it was a rough first half, Indiana would go onto win 74-52.

Indiana shot just 32.3 percent from the floor in the first half and scored 25 points at just .714 points per possession while also being down by 2-points to UIndy at the half. However, in the second half the Hoosiers switched gears and went on to shoot 64.5 percent in the second half while forcing 10 turnovers.

“We had a nice halftime talk,” Indiana basketball head coach Mike Woodson said postgame. “But I thought, to start the game, I thought we were a little tight. Guys not really familiar the first time playing in front of a crowd. And I’m not using that as an excuse. We missed so many layups, our bigs, around the rim, and we couldn’t make free throws. And you’ve got to give them credit. That team plays hard.

When the final buzzer had went off, the Hoosiers were led in scoring from from newcomers Kel’el Ware and Mackenzie Mgbako with a team high 14 points-each. Malik Reneau had 13 points and Xavier Johnson added nine points and five assists. Indiana basketball also saw a strong performance from the second unit that consisted of Anthony Leal, CJ Gunn, Gabe Cupps, Anthony Walker, and Payton Sparks who in total scored 33 of the 74 points.

“I thought our second unit was fantastic.” Woodson said. ” … I’ve always stressed that the second unit is just as important as the first unit. And I’ve tried to build teams that way, where if you’re not getting it from the first unit, you can go get it from the second unit.”
