The IU basketball season and the Mike Woodson era has officially come to an end.
The Hoosiers and the world found out that Indiana would not be a part of the 2025 NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening. While it is still no real shock that Indiana did not make the tournament, they did enough to feel that they would sneak in regardless.
With Hoosiers being out, it was controversial to some that teams such as North Carolina, Texas, and Xavier made it over the Hoosiers, considering IU basketball had a better resume on paper.
Despite the 13 losses, Indiana had six by single digits and four by just two possessions or less.
Indiana had a 4-13 record against Quad 1 opponents, but were perfect among Quad 2-4 matchups.
“I know the scores and the losses don’t really reflect that much in the NET,” IU senior wing Luke Goode said in the locker room after the Oregon loss in the Big Ten Tournament. “But you look those games that we lost, the five in a row, those were one-two possessions game. But you think about Maryland, game-winning three. Purdue, game-wining floater on the road. Then you look at who we beat, we beat good teams. Michigan State. Purdue at home. We beat some really good teams. I don’t know what the history is with teams not making the tournament without a Quad 2-4 loss, I think that’s something people need to take into account and know we belong in the field and and can beat anybody.
There were many people that weighed in on the decision by the NCAA Tournament committee to leave IU basketball out of the field of 68, but there was a pretty notable comment made by former head coach of the Hoosiers, Tom Crean.
“Indiana has been and always will be a Blue Blood,” said Tom Crean in a Tweet. “I actually thought they would get in. I also thought North Carolina would. Indiana definitely finished strong enough to get in. That’s a head scratcher.”
It is a head scratcher that the Hoosiers did not make the NCAA Tournament but regardless, IU basketball should never be in the position to begin with.
The process of the Hoosiers finding their next head coach will ramp up in the coming weeks.
