Hoosier Illustrated Live Blog: Final: Indiana basketball 71, Michigan State 67

Indiana basketball heads back on the road, traveling up north to East Lansing, Michigan, to face the Michigan State Spartans. Indiana is coming off a loss to Michigan that made them 5-8 in the Big Ten.

The Spartans enter the game with a record of 19-4 (10-2 Big Ten) under Hall of Fame head coach Tom Izzo. Michigan State has seven players that score 7.5 points per game or more and are led by 13.4 points per night from senior guard Jaden Akins. MSU is tied for 11th nationally (second in the Big Ten) with an average of 40.7 rebounds per game. They outrebound their opponents by 10.2 boards per night, the third-best figure in the country.

Tipoff is set for 9:00 ET on Peacock.

First half:

Michigan State wins the tip. They score. 2-0 Spartans.

Mgbako misses a three. Michigan State scores again. Luke Goode picked up his first foul.

Ballo draws an off-ball foul. Was fighting for position. He would miss a floater.

Leal picks up his first foul. MSU extends lead to 7-0.

Did not take long for Malik Reneau to check in for Luke Goode.

Galloway misses a three but Leal gets and offensive rebound and Reneau would score.

MSU hits a three. 10-2 MSU.

Mgbako hits a tough jumper.

Couple of offensive rebounds by Ballo and Reneau and Ballo finally gets a ball to drop.

Rice in for Leal.

Ballo got another score drop with Reneau feeding him. Reneau and Ballo having strong chemistry thus far. Good showing from the front court.

Reneau is missing a few bunnies, however.

Mgbako picks up a foul. Tucker checks in.

Indiana basketball missing a ton of good looks.

Turnover Indiana basketball and we go to break.

MSU leads 18-8 with 11:47 left in the half.

Indiana basketball in a 2-3 zone. MSU breaks that easily.

Good move by Bryson Tucker and he draws a foul. He goes 2-2 at the line.

Goode hits a three. Hoosiers down 7.

Rice with a nice drive and he draws a foul. He goes 1-2 at the line.

Rice steal but he misses a three.

Liking what Rice and Tucker have brought off the bench for Indiana so far. High energy from both guys.

Ballo with a nice dish to Tucker who goes for the slam and draws the foul.

MSU up 22-14 with 7:47 left in the half.

Tucker goes 1-2 at the line.

Ballo gets a floater to drop.

Ballo gets a defensive rebound and then draws the foul. Hoosiers in the 1-and-1. Reneau subs in for Tucker.

Luke Goode three and the lead is cut to 24-20.

Xavier Booker hits a three in the corner. MSU back up 7.

Ballo bucket. Lead back down to 4.

Reneau gets fouled. He goes 1-2 at the line.

Rice hits a three. MSU up by only three now.

The zone that Indiana has went to has completely flipped the script on Michigan State. Indiana has slowed down the offense of the Spartans while also finding their own.

MSU leads 29-28 with 3:22 left in the half.

Ballo picks up a foul. MSU’s Cooper went 0-2 at the line however.

Ballo gets fouled. He goes 2-2 at the line. Hoosiers are up 30-29 now and have their first lead of the game.

Leal picks up an offensive foul.

Goode got fouled. He goes 2-2. Indiana basketball up 32-29. Timeout MSU with 53 seconds left in the half.

Reneau gets a defensive rebound. Mike Woodson calls a timeout. Indiana will get the final shot.

Reneau tried to get a bucket but couldn’t get one to drop.

At the half: Indiana basketball 32, MSU 29

Second Half

Indiana basketball. Ballo throws it away. Can’t have that.

Two really sloppy turnovers from Oumar Ballo to open up the 2nd half.

Ballo finally gets a bucket to drop. Indiana up 34-29.

Rice picks ups his 2nd foul.

Reneau scores on Booker. Indiana up 7.

Another MSU turnover.

Reneau gets another one. Indiana basketball up 9.

MSU stops their bleeding. Indiana up 38-31.

Ballo with a steal. Ballo gets called for a charge however. We got to break.

Indiana up 38-31 with 15:33 left.

Galloway in for Ballo. Ballo has three fouls. Going small.

Indiana needs more size in the game with Ballo out. Would like to see either Mgbako or Hatton in for Ballo on the bench. Pair them with Reneau.

Reneau picks up his 2nd foul.

MSU cuts it to 38-35.

Goode misses a three but then draws a charge. Big play from the senior.

Good with a TOUGH shot. Hoosiers up 5.

Reneau layup and Hoosiers are back up 7.

Indiana basketball leads 42-35 with 11:43 left to go.

MSU cuts it to 42-37.

Jump ball. MSU ball.

Reneau picks up his third foul.

Ballo finds a cutting Galloway for an easy score.

Rice finds the lane and Indiana basketball is back up 7.

Rice gets another tough one to drop.

Ballo with his 4th foul. That is not good at all.

MSU cuts the leas to just 4.

Galloway drives. Hoosiers up 6.

Mgbako gets called for the loose ball foul. MSU has the momentum.

Indiana basketball leads 48-44 with 6:17 left. 

MSU in the bonus.

MSU cuts the lead down to 50-48.

Reneau scores. He has been very good in 1v1.

Reneau scores through contact and then hits the free throw.

Leal picks up his 3rd foul.

Reneau scores AGAIN.

Leal gets a steal and then Galloway slams it home. Indiana up 59-52.

Reneau scores again and Indiana is up 9. MSU timeout with 3:12 left.

6-0 run the last 50 seconds and now the Hoosiers are in the driver seat to get a MASSIVE road win. Up 61-52 with 3:12 left.

Keep it simple. Defend. Feed the post. Take care of the ball.

MU scores out the break. Indiana up 61-54.

MSU fouls and we go to break.

MSU starting to foul. Indiana still not in the bonus.

Galloway gets fouled. Indiana now in the bonus.

Galloway misses the front end.

MSU cuts the lead to 61-56.

Jump ball called. Indiana basketball. Mike Woodson calls timeout. 2:15 to go.

Refs review an out of bounds call. Indiana keeps the ball with five seconds left on shot clock.

Mgbako hits a shot but he did not get the ball off in time. Brutal.

Ballo in for Reneau.

MSU cuts it to 3.

Mike Woodson calls timeout. 1:21 left.

Rice goes all the way but he missed the layup. Mgbako got the rebound and then was fouled. He goes 1-2. Indiana up 4 with 1:10 left.

Rice gets fouled. He missed the front end up the 1 and 1.

MSU cuts it to 62-60. 32.7 left. MSU timeout.

Rice got fouled again. Got very lucky to get the ball. Rice goes 2-2. Hoosiers up 4.

Oumar Ballo fouls out. Refs were anticipating that call. Ballo defended well there.

MSU cuts it to 64-62.

Reneau gets fouled. He goes 1-2. Hoosiers up 65-62.

Leal gets called for the foul.

MSU cuts it to 65-64.

Mgbako gets the ball. Fouled. He goes to the line. He goes 2-2. Hoosiers back up 3. 13.3 left to go.

Indiana basketball going with the intentional foul. Galloway fouls.

MSU cuts it to 67-66.

Mgbako got shoved. He goes 2-2 again. Indiana up 3.

Galloway fouls again.

MSU cuts it to 69-67. MSU tried to go for the offensive rebound.
