Hoosier Illustrated Live Blog: Final – Maryland 79, Indiana basketball 78

Indiana basketball continues Big Ten Conference play in its 125th season of competition against Maryland at noon ET on Sunday, Jan. 26, at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers enter this game 5-4 in the Big Ten.

The Terrapins enter the game with a record of 14-5 (4-4 Big Ten) under third-year head coach Kevin Willard. Maryland is led by 15.6 points and 8.0 rebounds per game from freshman forward Derik Queen. Junior guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie contributes 14.4 points, 4.5 assists, and a team-high 47 made 3-pointers. Senior forward Julian Reese puts up 13.7 points and 9.2 rebounds a night.

Tipoff is set for noon ET on CBS.

Reneau scores on Queen. Hoosiers up 4-0.

Terps score but Rice drives and dishes to Ballo for the slam.

Scored tied 8-8 now. Mgbako got his first points to drop.

Maryland takes the lead but then Mgbako hits a three.

Mgbako with a strong drive. Hoosiers get a stop then a missed 15fter by Goode goes into the hands of Carlyle, who then puts it back.

Maryland calls timeout. Hoosiers up 19-16.

Malik Reneau picks up his second foul. Should see the lineup that we have been used to seeing over the last few weeks the rest of the first half.

Carlyle fouled. He goes 0-2 at the line.

Ballo fouled on the dunk attempt. He goes 2-2 at the line. Indiana down 23-21.

Under-8 Media Timeout: Maryland 25, Indiana basketball 21

Goode misses a three out of the break.

Rice to Ballo for the slam. Been a lot of Ballo slams today.

A missed a Goode defensive rebound leads to Maryland knocking down a three. Goode makes up for it by knocking down a three of their own.

Galloway gets a drive to drop. Hoosiers down 2.

Goode fouls Rice on the three point attempt. Maryland’s Rice went 2-3 at the line.

Mgbako knocks down a jumper and is fouled as well. He misses the free throw, however.

Maryland leads 32-30 with 3:44 to go in the half.

Ballo called for a foul out of the break. His first foul.

Goode three in the corner. Hoosiers down 34-33.

Terps extend the lead back up to 5.

Goode gets fouled on a three-points attempt. He goes 2-3 at the line.

Rice fouled. He goes 2-2. Indiana back down 38-37.

Second Half

Indiana basketball to start the half. Couple of missed threes from both Mgbako and Rice.

Queen dunk and Maryland back up three.

Lack of effort from Indiana to start the half and Mike Woodson calls timeout. Hoosiers down 42-37.

Mgbako misses a drive.

The spacing is so bad for Indiana right now. How is this not seen by the coaching staff?

Rice gets a floater to drop for Indiana basketball.

Galloway misses a three but Mgbako gets the rebound and scores. Indian basketball down one.

Maryland hits a three.

Reneau misses a bunny out of the break. Illegal screen called on Maryland.

Maryland extends the lead 47-41. Reneau turned the ball over.

Mgbako hits a much-needed three. Maryland answers.

Maryland extends the lead to 53-44.

Mgbako bucket then a Rice bucket and the Maryland lead is back dow to 53-48.

Timeout Indiana. Hoosiers down 57-48 with 11:07 left. 

Galloway scores out of the break.

Mgbako with a steal leads to Rice getting fouled in transition. Rice goes 1-2 at the line.

Play stoppage. Refs reviewing a foul on Mgbako. Nothing there.

Maryland three then a Rice three.

Reneau cuts the Maryland lead down to 6.

Ballo to Rice for three. Hoosiers down three now.

Maryland timeout.

Strong bucket by Reneau. Indiana basketball down 1.

Huge Maryland three. Terps back up 4.

Ballo repsonds. Hoosiers down 2.

Defensive breakdown, after defensive breakdown for Indiana.

Anthony Leal! Forces a turnover then sprints down the floor to get the bucket plus the foul. Tied at 70.

Defensive stop by Indiana basketball. Myles Rice hits a three and Indiana back with the lead. 73-70.

Leal gets a defensive rebound and is fouled. Final media timeout.

Leal defensive rebound leads to nothing. Reneau misses bunny and Maryland scores.

Carless turnover by Galloway. Blame Ballo there for not looking for the ball.

Leal once again comes up with a huge play. Reneau misses a jumper and Leal gets the rebound and puts it in plus the foul. He hits the free throw.

Maryland cuts the lead down to 2.

Galloway fouled. He misses the front end of a 1-and-1. Maryland with the ball with 18.0 second left.

Maryland just hit a three and the air out of the building just left. Hoosiers ball with 5.6 left. Wow.

Hoosiers can’t find the bucket. Hoosiers lose. Just pathetic, man.
