The Indiana basketball program is two days away from its season opener and had positive returns after its exhibition win on Friday for senior guard Trey Galloway. Galloway, who had surgery in the spring to repair a meniscus injury he suffered on Senior Day, is gearing up to see more minutes moving forward.
Galloway played 11 minutes in its win over Marian and according to head coach Mike Woodson he ‘passed the test’.
“Gallo passed the test,” Woodson said of Galloway. “He didn’t have any complaints. He practiced the next day. He had yesterday off. Hopefully he can log more minutes now, I’m hoping. That’s my thought process now going into Wednesday.”
The Indiana basketball staff have been very deliberate with Galloway’s rehab process — one that Galloway said was about patience and making sure there was no early return to action.
“It’s been a long process, but a good one,” Galloway said at IU’s media day. “I’ve had a lot of time to ease into things. You don’t want to rush anything and come back too soon. Taking my time with it, and making sure I’m strong and 100% back to where I was.”
Last season the 6-foot-5 guard averaged 10.8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game playing as the main ball handler and only true playmaker on the roster.
He became one of four Indiana basketball players with three games of 11+ assists in a career, joining Isiah Thomas, Jamal Meeks and Michael Lewis, doing so all in the last six games he played. He ranked ninth in the Big Ten in assists per game and assist rate. He also ranked ninth in assist to turnover ratio while also playing at least 30 minutes a game.
Now, Galloway will play alongside transfer guards Myles Rice and Kanaan Carlyle, both players who bring added versatility and playmaking ability to the Indiana backcourt. As for teammate Kanaan Carlyle, the Stanford transfer did not play in Friday’s win due to a rib injury. Woodson said that he hadn’t practiced the last few days but was ‘hoping’ to get him back today when Indiana took the practice floor.
Galloway has appeared in 108 games, including 66 starts, for Indiana basketball throughout his career. He is coming off a career year in games and minutes played, points, assists and steals.
Indiana basketball takes on SIUE on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm ET.
