Bryson Tucker is the only freshman on the IU basketball roster this season but fans have to wait another week before they officially see him on the floor against an opponent other than themselves.

The 5-star freshman was one of three players who was held out of the charity exhibition against Tennessee on Sunday afternoon, but he was the one who was a late addition to the injury report.

Following IU’s 66-62 win, coach Mike Woodson addressed Tucker’s availability moving forward.

“He got hurt the other day — the last practice,” Woodson said. “He got kneed in the thigh. He just couldn’t get his stride together yesterday (Saturday) and today, so we just held him out.

“We’ll have to go back home and gauge it and see where he is. (But) It’s nothing serious.”

While a 5-star freshman and McDonald’s All-American, Tucker is still widely unknown to a lot of Indiana basketball fans. Tucker wasn’t your traditional high-profile high school recruit as he didn’t play on major AAU circuits, instead opting for Pro-Ams and other events.

“The kid is versatile, he’s 6-7 and can do a lot of things. He handles the basketball, he can pass it, he can score the ball, and he tries to defend,” Woodson said. “He’s just got to learn the college game, the college ways. It’s different in high school, there’s a major jump there.”

Tucker’s mindset and approach to the game is what stands out and he’s focused on just the big picture.

“Affecting winning because that’s the main goal,” Tucker said about his expectations this season when asked at IU media day. “You want to win so if you can come in as a freshman and impact winning that’s one of the main things.”

IU basketball takes the floor again on Friday night for its final tuneup against Marian.
