A former IU basketball standout got paid today when it comes to NBA free agency.

As it was announced via ESPN Senior NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski, former IU basketball wing OG Anunoby signed a massive five-year, $212.5 million contract to return to the New York Knicks. This news comes after it was reported a few days ago that Anunoby intended to opt out of his deal and was “not thrilled” with the New York Knicks’ first offer.

In the end, he decided to stay with the Knicks as the franchise has already made multiple, key moves to compete for a NBA Championship next season.

“They’re committed to having him here long-term,” SNY’s Ian Begley said of Anunoby. “If I had to guess, I think there would be some injury protections in the deal or some stipulation with games played.”

“I’d be very surprised if the Knicks don’t bring Anunoby back one way or another,” New York Post writer Stefan Bondy added. “If I’m the Knicks, I’m attaching incentives to games played because of his injury history. A lot of that is on what the competition is offering. The bottom line is I’d be very surprised if Anunoby doesn’t come back to the Knicks.”

After being traded to the Knicks at the trade deadline, Anunoby averaged 14.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and shot 39.4 percent from three in 23 games. He played nine games in the postseason, seeing those numbers rise to 15.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 41 percent from three.

“OG is extremely excited,” former IU head coach Tom Crean told Adam Zagoria. “If he was ever going to leave Toronto he wanted it to be New York and the Knicks and I know he truly wanted to stay here after his short time this past season.”

Before being traded to the New York Nicks, Anunoby spent 7 seasons with the Toronto Raptors where he was drafted in the 2017 NBA Draft. He helped lead the Raptors to winning the 2019 NBA Finals. He averaged 11.8 points and 4.3 rebounds in 7 seasons with the Raptors.

Anunoby spent two seasons with IU basketball playing under then head coach of the Hoosiers, Tom Crean. He appeared in 50 games for the Hoosiers during his time there averaging 6.8 points and 3.5 rebounds during that time. He also helped Indiana win the 2015-2016 Big Ten Regular Season championship and was a part of the team that made their last sweet-16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
