IU basketball head coach Mike Woodson didn’t mince words following Indiana’s 73-64 loss to Oregon on Tuesday night. He made it quite clear how he felt and directed it right at the officiating.

“I’m just saying it can’t be 21-7,” Woodson said.

21-7 was the free throw disparity in favor of Oregon. While Oregon finished 19-of-21 from the line, Indiana was just 3-of-7. In the second half alone, Oregon was 15-of-17 while IU was just 2-of-2.

In total, the foul count was 15-12 but Indiana was called on 12 second-half fouls compared to just five for the Ducks after halftime.

“We had our chances. But listen guys, in a physical game like this, it can’t be 21-7 (on free throw attempts).” Woodson said. “You gotta be kidding me. 21-7 on fucking free throws is bullshit. It just can’t be, not in a physical game. They’re a physical team, and it can’t be that lopsided. It’s impossible.”

While the foul count was lopsided, eight of Oregons 17 second-half free throws came over the last 1:05 of game time, when Indiana was looking to foul.

But, Oregon went from 9:48 of the second half to the 4:39 mark without being called for a foul and then went the remainder of the game without being called for a foul.

In a physical game in the paint — which was expected — IU basketball center Oumar Ballo did not attempt a single free throw, just the second time all season that happened. He came in averaging 5.2 free throw attempts per game.

Oregon center Nate Bittle was 8-of-8 from the line after averaging 2.9 attempts a game before Tuesday. His eight attempts were a season high.

As a team, Indiana came into Tuesday’s matchup averaging 19.6 attempts a game, while Oregon averaged 16.8.

“It’s what it is. I can’t go back and get it,” Woodson added. “But in a physical game like that where both teams are battling their asses off, you can’t punish one team and put one team at the line for 21 times and the other team only gets there seven times. That’s awful.”

IU basketball enters its final game of the regular season at 18-12 (9-10) and remains among the first four byes or last four in category among most tournament projections. The Hoosiers face off against Ohio State at 3:45 pm on Saturday.
