The Indiana football program received its newest commitment in the 2024 class on Wednesday afternoon as Josh Philostin announced his pledge to the Hoosiers.
Philostin is a three-star cornerback out of Cardinal Newman (Fla.) high school. He is rated as the No. 487 player in the 247Sports Composite Rankings and a top-50 cornerback.
He had offers from Rutgers, Arkansas, Duke, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Miami (Fla.), Penn State, Louisville, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Texas A&M and others.
Philostin took an official visit to Indiana in June and immediately put the Hoosiers near the top in his recruitment.
Philostin is a versatile athlete who has played numerous positions on both sides of the ball. At 5-foot-11 and 175-pounds, he’s a quick and athletic player who also starred as a track athlete. In 2022, he had 12 tackles, six pass breakups and four interceptions. He also caught 20 passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns.
“A speedy cover corner that has impacted the game in all three phases on Friday nights scoring touchdowns as both a wide receiver and a return man,” 247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins said earlier this year. ” … (he) can chew up turf and quickly close gaps. Has some experience in bump-and-run coverage as he likes to shove wide receivers and then retreat back towards the sidelines. Picked off four passes as a junior and broke up six more. Could likely carve out a role on the perimeter on Saturdays, but his future might be in the slot. However, will eventually need to add significant mass in hopes of not getting overpowered in the box.”Should be viewed as a developmental prospect with plenty of upside given the speed markers. Likely going to need some time before he’s ready to go on Saturdays. Viewed by most scouts as a defender long term, but makes plays on offense and could get looks there, as well.”
Philostin becomes the 18th commitment in the 2024 recruiting class for Tom Allen and the Indiana football program. It’s a number that Allen is very comfortable with heading into the winter and spring, when the transfer portal will be extremely active.
“We’re there. You might add a guy or two, but I don’t see a lot more. I’m thinking in the 18 to 20-ish range is where you’re at,” Allen said about the expected 2024 high school class. “So I think we’re really close to where we want to be from a high school number, which is higher than a lot of people are choosing to go right now.”
