The Indiana football program went into the 2023 recruiting cycle knowing it needed a big haul — not only for immediate impact players, but also for guys who could make an impact at the program for a few years.

Despite Indiana’s 2023 class being ranked No. 75 overall in the 247Sports Composite Rankings, there were some notable names that joined the class late in the cycle.

One of those was defensive back Jordan Shaw. Shaw was a Colorado commitment but following the coaching change, Tom Allen and staff beat out Deion Sanders’ new crew in Boulder.

IU flipped Shaw on signing day.

Throughout spring practice, Shaw turned heads. Now, he’s ‘positioned to be a factor’ as a true freshman according to On3 National Football Writer Matt Zenitz.

“Jordan Shaw, really was a tremendous addition to our program out of the state of California,” IU head coach Tom Allen said during signing day. ” … He has length. He runs really well. He watches film. He has tremendous ball skills. He is a great receiver in high school. Made a ton of plays with the ball in his hand. A punt returner. That’s what I look for when you look at DBs. You love them to be punt returners. It shows athleticism with the ball in their hand. So real excited about bringing him from St. Pius X High School out there in Downey, California.”

Shaw was ranked No. 613 overall in the composite rankings and the No. 61 cornerback in the 2023 class.

“Me and coach Shelby built a really good bond together … they said I would be able to play right away, everything I was looking for was there for me,” Shaw said after he committed. “I had to pick a place I felt really good with the coaches and Indiana was it.”

Indiana enters the 2023 season very thin on the backside of its defense. In total, nine of the top 10 tacklers from a season ago are also gone. There is a clear opening in the secondary and Shaw has the upside to be a significant contributor at Indiana.
