Hoosier Illustrated Live Blog: Final – Indiana basketball 77, Penn State 71

Indiana basketball returns to the floor today with a road matchup at the historic Palestra, the Cathedral of College Basketball against a very good Penn State squad. The Hoosiers are coming off their 2nd win in the Big Ten vs Rutgers last week.

The Nittany Lions enter the game with a record of 12-2 (2-1 Big Ten) under second-year head coach Mike Rhoades. Penn State has won 12-straight homes games and are off to the program’s best start since the 2019-20 season. PSU has six players averaging at least 9.9 points per game, led by 15.0 points, 8.5 assists, and 2.3 steals per game from fifth-year senior guard Ace Baldwin Jr., the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. Junior forward Yanic Konan Niederhauser leads the team in rebounding at 6.8 per contest to go along with 13.1 points.

Tipoff is set for noon on BTN.

Penn State wins the tip. They score first.

Oumar Ballo answers with a hook late into the shot clock.

Luke Goode picked up his first foul.

Penn Stat extends the lead to 6-2.

Luke Goode gets and offensive rebound off a Mgbako missed three. Got the bucket plus the foul. Tough play by him. He made the free throw.

Good early action here. Both teams trading buckets and stops.

Indiana basketball forces a shot clock violation.

Mgbako missed a 3 again but Ballo got the offensive rebound and then found Mgbako again and he hit the three.

Hoosiers gave up a score then went down and Goode hit another three.

This Indiana team is playing really good basketball right now. Up 13-10. 2-4 from 3. Forcing defensive stops. Rebounding the ball well on the offensive end.

Luke Goode picks up his 2nd foul. Leal checks in.

Mgbako with a strong drive and then settles for a smooth baseline jumper. He picked up a foul on the other end.

Myles Rice playing really active on the defense end. No easy passes getting through him.

Ballo bullies his way in inside. Gets the foul. He goes 1-2. Hoosiers up 2.

Penn State ties it up after a Anthony Leal turnover.

Penn State takes the lead and Indiana turns it over again.

Lions were building momentum, leading by 6, Ballo found Tucker for a nice cut and slam to halt Penn State.

Ballo got blocked out of the break. Should have been a goal tend. Hoosiers got a break with Ace Baldwin picking up a 2nd foul.

Galloway floater ties it.

Carlyle picks up a foul as Penn State scores. Lions back up 3.

Rice missed a quick driving layup and Ballo got fouled as he was trying to put it up. He goes 1-2 at the line.

Ballo ties it up with a bucket and then 2-2 at the line.

Hatton in for Ballo.

Galloway gets called for an offensive foul.

Indiana basketball leaving a lot of points on the board. Defense has been great here.

Ballo cuts and gives IU the lead back.

Just like that, Ballo picks up 2 fouls. Hatton checks in for him.

Myles Rice gets call for a travel.

Defensive stop and we go into halftime.

At the Half: Indiana basketball 29, Penn State 29

Second Half

Indiana basketball with the ball to start the half.

Not a good shot from Rice but Galloway gets the rebound. Mgbako nails a corner three.

Defensive stop then Mgbako strong take to the rim and score.

Hoosiers get a steal, Galloway fins Mgbako in transition for another three!

Penn State called timeout. Lead is 37-29. Mgbako with 8 points to start the half.

Penn State misses a shot and Rice speeds down to score. 10-0 run by Indiana basketball.

12-0 run Indiana basketball. Ballo got a bucket off a Goode offensive rebound.

Goode 3. Indiana up 13.

Rice strong take and he gets fouled on the shot.

Media Timeout at 15:57. Indiana basketball leads 44-33

Rice goes 1-2 at the line.

Mgbako with a tough baseline fadeaway.

Myles Rice hits a three and Hoosiers are up 15.

Goode with a three in transition. He did pick up a foul, however. 3 fouls on him. Leal checks in for him.

Hoosiers just shredding the defense of Penn State right now.

Mike Woodson calls timeout. Hoosiers up 58-45. 

Galloway with Indiana’s 8th made three. Hoosiers up 61-45.

Couple misses by Carlyle. Ballo picks up his 3rd foul.

Penn State cuts the lead to just 61-51.

Hard foul involving Anthony Leal. It resulted on a Flagrant 1 foul called on Penn State. Leal goes 1-2 at the line. Indiana gets the ball back but Galloway misses a three.

Indiana basketball forced to burn a timeout at the 8:14 mark. Could not get the ball in.

Penn State cuts the lead down to just 8 but Mgbako hits another 3 and the Hoosiers are back up 11.

Oumar Ballo picked up his 4th foul. 7:23 left to go. Hatton checks in.

Penn State three cuts the lead down to just 7.

Ballo checks back and gets the bucket plus the foul. He makes the free throw. Hoosiers back up 7.

Ballo gets fouled on a rebound attempt. He goes 1-2 at the line. Hatton checks in for him.

Rice hits both free throws. Hoosiers up 71-63.

Big slam by Ballo. Indiana basketball up 8.

Galloway airball on a three but went down and blew up a dribble handoff and got the ball and called timeout. Hoosiers have no more timeouts. 2:05 to go.

Penn State hits a three and Indiana is only up 73-71.

Hoosiers got called for a 10 second violation.

Mgbako gots fouled on a baseline jumper. He goes 2-2 at the stripe. Hoosiers up 4.

Penn State misses a three. Myles Rice gets the rebound. Gets fouled and hits both free throws.

Hoosiers get the big win!
