Drake head coach Ben McCollum ‘has emerged’ as a top candidate for the next Indiana basketball head coach, according to national basketball reporter Jeff Goodman.

“Drake coach Ben McCollum has emerged as one of the top candidates for the Indiana opening and has really impressed Indiana AD Scott Dolson, source told The Field of 68,” Goodman said on Twitter.

McCollum is in his first season with Drake and led them to a 30-3 record after winning both the Missouri Valley regular season season and conference tournament championships. The 2024-25 season is McCollum’s first season at the Division I level.

McCollum spent his first 15 seasons coaching at Northwest Missouri State, winning four Division II National Championships in six seasons from 2016-2022. They were also the favorites to win in 2020 before the tournament was cancelled due to covid. They were 31-1 before the season was cancelled.

He has a career record of 395-91 (.813) at the Division II level.The 2024-25 season is McCollum’s first year as a head coach or assistant coach at the Division I level.
McCollum, 43, is originally from Iowa City.

Indiana basketball fell to Oregon in its first game of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday, falling to 19-13 overall. The Hoosiers are trying to avoid a second-straight season without making the NCAA Tournament.
